Abeka Homeschool curriculum has been a standard for many years and is tried and true in the homeschool realm. Based on the spiral method, this Christian curriculum will grow with your child from Preschool to Grade 12 using a traditional textbook / workbook approach. Using Abeka, your students will be able to show understanding of grade-level knowledge and achieve or exceed the norms on national standardised testing. Students will also be able to go on to pursue a college career upon completion.
There are a few options to choose from. The first is Parent Led – which means that the parent plays the roll of the teacher and uses guides to bring the information to their children. You can buy a full kit for the year with all the subjects included.
Abeka Video Academy gives parents the option of having their students sit in on real classes taught by experts. Your student will enjoy the feeling of being in a classroom and can experience school any time and anywhere that works for them! Each course comes with a video manual so parents can follow what their student is doing, and you can choose to make the year accredited or independent based on your needs.
Not interested in a whole year of video? Abeka also offers Homeschool Streaming which allows you to pay a discounted amount for just a few hours. Unable to teach your kids one day? Use your video hours and they can keep going without missing a beat. Choose which lesson you need when you need it.
Subjects can be purchased separately.
ABeka Academy-how we make it work
We have used ABeka Academy for the past 9 years with our two kids, starting in Kindergarten. Overall we are pleased with the curriculum – it is very thorough and our kids are learning well. But we have tweaked and adjusted as we’ve worked through the grades to make it work for us.
In the elementary grades there is a lot of “seatwork” which gets very tedious, repetitive, and can squash a child’s natural love of learning. After spending hours in ABeka forums and talking to retired elementary level public school teachers who were also using ABeka Academy, we cut out most of that seat work. If one of my children struggled with a concept we went back and worked through the seatwork that was specific to the concept.
As my kids have gotten older and moved into the middle school and high school grades they have customized their approach to completing the classes based on their different personalities- one does one subject each day of the week and gets a whole week of work done by the end of the week, the other continues to do one class of each subject each day… However, due to how thorough the curriculum is – it has been really hard to join any outside co-ops or other groups – because we really do need to be home to get school done.
We love that we can have that type of flexibility. We love the solid foundation of knowledge the kids are developing. We appreciate the “accredited” factor and “private school at home” factor in regards to record keeping and transcripts, especially in the older grades. And having tutors/help available is another benefit we enjoy. Additionally, my kids have memorized an amazing amount of scripture.
We generally purchase a kit from Home Science Tools for each grade to let the kids do all of the science experiments. In the younger grades I found an art project kit to purchase so that the kids would have all of those supplies and I wouldn’t have to search for them. These are additional costs, but they made the learning better and the school days more enjoyable for my kids.
I personally love science and history – so we have supplemented with a wide array of additional literature and fun science discovery books and projects as well. I feel that this is giving my kids a more rounded view of history and the world than they would get from just doing ABeka, but ABeka gives them a solid foundation and launching point for these additional things.
The school day takes us 4 to 6 hours, depending on how well the kids are focusing that day!
