The mission of the Duolingo creators was to produce a program that both made learning fun and also available to all. Duolingo is free for individuals and schools. It includes a personalised learning path for each student. The bite-size lessons feel more like a game than a textbook, making it fun for students to engage with. Duolingo takes the approach of teaching real-world communication (like ordering in a restaurant) and focuses the lessons on that goal through reading, writing, and speaking. Duolingo encourages students to discover language patterns on their own, similar to the way they learned to speak as a child. Duolingo currently has 33 languages with another 5 in the beta stage.
Duolingo also offers Duolingo ABC, a program designed to help kids read. Children will learn phonics, sight words, handwriting, and vocabulary – all for free!
