Singapore Math is actually known as Primary Mathematics or Dimensions Math. Both were designed around the way students learn in Singapore which is vastly different from the usual North American math curriculums. Singapore math uses a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract progression to teach students to think through concepts and apply them in new ways every time they encounter a new problem. This process involves using manipulatives (concrete), then drawing what they’ve just handled (Pictorial), and then applying to numbers (Abstract).
The curriculum is designed to build strong problem-solving skills while encouraging critical thinking in students. Students consistently build on past concepts while being taught new math skills.
A Video Subscription is also available for Dimensions Math from grades 1-6.
Impressive and fun
I used Primary Math Grade One and plan to continue the series. My six year old has great math skills and is able to figure out some concepts from the pictures. There is not a lot of written instruction so most of the explaining is done by me, but I find it easy with how they demonstrate the concepts. You do need both books but I have not needed extra tests, she understands everything very well and overall she likes this curriculum.

We started using the Dimensions Pre-KA textbook and workbook only last month, but not with the teacher’s guide. I’d read elsewhere that the textbook is pretty much enough for teaching if math is already your jam (it is mine!) but that the teacher’s guide is useful if you want more guidance and activity suggestions.
I kid you not, every day this past week, my 3yo has come running up asking to “learn math.” I think what appeals to the 3yo is the recurring characters and the blend of physical (jumping along a number line), musical (we’ve sung “5 Little Monkeys” so many times now), and just sitting in my lap, pointing at what she seems to pick up with ease. Will be purchasing Pre-KB, KA, and KB soon.
