The ULAT (Universal Language Acquisition Tool) is an online program that drops beginning learners right into either French or Spanish with videos and text format.
The program uses a combination of lessons to encourage a variety of learning activities such as watch, listen, repeat, speak, gesture, read and more.
Students can access 15 lessons for free to see how it works before commiting to the full program. It’s designed to be done as an independent study, however it offers no evaluation other than self-evaluation.
Studying forty-five minutes a day will give you a full year’s study after 180 days. The full program can take approximately three years to complete.
Biblical and Secular options are available.
Immersion-based!
My child used this program independently, for French. I love how you can try the first 15 videos for free to see what you think. It starts at the beginning assuming you don’t know French but I suppose you could go ahead if you already know some, or speed through the first part. I see that they also have Spanish. It is very different than other programs because its not translation-based from English. Its immersion. My child really learned speaking skills! However she did find it boring at times and sometimes we found the way it was presented a bit tricky to follow (not a lot, but just a bit) and we thought the videos were good but not amazing quality. The price is great. Overall I recommend this program and would use it again (child is not continuing studying French past Gr 9 so we stopped using it).
